A “flash in the pan” is a burst of early promise or attention that does not lead to lasting success. The phrase is linked in the episode to an old firearm whose gunpowder could flare in its pan without firing the gun. A singer whose success comes from just one hit may also be called a “one-hit wonder.”

Cultural note: “Flash in the pan” is dismissive when applied to a person’s achievement, so it can sound unfair if the evidence is limited. Use it only when the success clearly faded quickly; “early success that did not continue” is a more neutral description.
