A “high note” is a pleasant or successful moment, while a “low note” is disappointing or unpleasant. To end, finish, or leave on a high note is to close an event or period with a positive moment—or at a particularly successful point. The episode applies the musical image to a difficult year that still had bright moments.

Cultural note: These phrases describe the ending or strongest point, not necessarily the whole experience. A “high note” can be personal and small; it does not erase hardship that came before. “Go out on a high note” is often used when someone chooses to stop at a successful moment.

Keep exploringThe last moment can shape how we remember an experience. What would make an ending feel like a high note to you?
